Why cabbage seedlings die

Despite all the difficulties associated with growing cabbage seedlings, many gardeners still heroically want to overcome them. And it is no coincidence, because the seedlings grown with their own hands, brings a special joy and brings faith in their strength. However, in the case of cabbage, the most fortunate are those who live on their land and have the opportunity to create the necessary conditions for the seedlings. City dwellers of multi-storey buildings, especially if they do not have balconies and loggias, were less fortunate, since for them the cultivation of normal cabbage seedlings is almost impossible task. Therefore, most often complaints about the fact that cabbage seedlings wither, come precisely from residents of apartments with central heating, who, with all their desire, are usually not able to provide cabbage seedlings with the conditions under which it is able to develop normally.

Comment! Not for nothing experienced gardeners grow seedlings of any varieties of cabbage, including decorative only in hotbeds or greenhouses.

Even if you are not the happy owner of such structures, you can always think of something on your plot: install double-sheltered arches, make improvised greenhouses from scrap materials, finally install boxes with seedlings on the veranda, terrace or in any other cool room.

What is needed cabbage seedlings

What conditions are necessary for cabbage for good health and active growth and development?

  • Probably everyone, even novice gardeners know that cabbage is a cold-resistant plant. After all, not every vegetable crop that comes to us from the warm Mediterranean is able to withstand frosts down to -8 ° C. Young cabbage plants are also relatively resistant to cold, in the seedling phase they can tolerate a short-term decrease in temperature to -5 ° C.
  • At the same time, ideal conditions for growth and development are temperatures from + 16 ° С to + 20 ° С.
  • But the cabbage tolerates high temperatures very poorly. Already at air temperature of + 25 ° C and higher, she feels depressed, and at + 35 ° she loses the ability to form a head of cabbage, and young seedlings are likely to die.
  • Cabbage is also a light-loving plant, it equally needs a long day of light and bright good lighting. With an insufficient level of illumination, seedlings will develop poorly and slowly.
  • Cabbage is quite demanding on irrigation and humidity of both air and soil. But the greatest amount of moisture she needs during the formation of the head.

During the expansion of the leaf outlet, the need for moisture in cabbage is quite moderate. The land should dry slightly between watering procedures. True, the complete drying of the soil can lead to the death of young plants.
  • Finally, cabbage is the most demanding of all vegetable crops for nutrition. She needs regular regular feeding, without which a good harvest can not be obtained. But the need for them appears mainly after the development of 5-6 true leaves, that is, after the landing of cabbage seedlings in open ground. In the first phase of seedling development, she needs nutrition in minimal quantities and can get everything she needs from the nutrient soil in which she was sown.

Causes of decay

“Why does she fade?” - cabbage lovers ask. And now try to imagine or even check in practice what temperature is formed in the room of the apartment with central heating on the sunny window sill of the window facing south. It is in these conditions that the cabbage seedlings most often live, since it is also a light-loving plant. For some time she still keeps out of her last strength, but then sooner or later she dies, unable to cope with adverse conditions.

And novice gardeners can not understand what happened, because they did everything, as with other vegetables. They placed the seedlings in the heat, provided the maximum amount of light, even finished lighting up with special lamps. Liberally watered, as cabbage requires. But she still disappears. Tomatoes and peppers grow side by side in the same conditions and feel great, and cabbage is bad.

Comment! Many are beginning to think that the land in which the seedlings grow is unsuitable for cabbage and change the ground.

It is possible that they even sow seeds on seedlings again and again, but the situation repeats itself and no one can at all understand what to do.

It is often remembered that cabbage is highly susceptible to various fungal diseases, and its seeds must be processed before sowing with special fungicides, in extreme cases, with a solution of potassium permanganate. If this has not been done, then they usually calm down, thinking that they have finally found the cause of the failures with cabbage and next year everything will definitely work out. But the following year, after all seed treatments and additional spillage of biofungicides, nothing changes, the seedlings again wither and die.

But the fact is that all varieties of cabbage, especially for white-fiber species, have another feature in the care at the seedling stage. Cabbage seeds germinate well, quickly and together enough at a temperature of about + 20 ° C and even higher.

Tip! As soon as the first loops of seedlings appeared, the plants must be placed in a place with a low temperature for at least 7-12 days.

For white cabbage it is better if the temperature does not exceed + 8 ° С + 10 ° С, for a more thermophilic cauliflower, the maximum can rise to + 12 ° С + 15 ° С, but for any cabbage this period of lowering the temperature is strictly required at least at night time. Otherwise, we can assume that your seedlings are gone again. And sooner or later it will happen, unfortunately. Therefore, if you grow cabbage seedlings in an apartment and you have a balcony, even unglazed, you need to do the following. Immediately after the emergence of shoots, construct protection against frost from several layers of film for the seedlings and, without a doubt, put it on the balcony for 5-10 days.

Difficulties after transplant

But even if you pass this first stage of cabbage development correctly, there are several more challenges waiting for you. One of the most common problems when growing cabbage is its unhealthy appearance after transplanting into other containers or in open ground. As a rule, after this procedure, the lower leaves of the cabbage seedlings turn yellow, and she herself to some degree fades. This is a completely natural reaction of plants to some damage to the roots, inevitable when transplanting seedlings.

Tip! In order to minimize damage, it is recommended to shed cabbage plentifully a few hours before transplanting so that no lumps of soil remain on the roots.

It is also better to replant in very well spilled soil, practically liquid dirt. A few days after transplantation, seedlings should be pritenyat from the bright sun and kept in warm conditions at a temperature of about + 20 ° C.

This can be done by picking up seedlings in separate pots in the rooms. On the street, simply protect it from the bright sun to fully engraft in the new environment.

Of course, the view of the withering cabbage seedlings cannot help but be tormented by the gardener's heart, but in the case of her transplanting, you can be sure that in a few days she will definitely recover and begin to develop further with a new force. True, this will happen only under the condition that in a few days after transplantation the cabbage seedlings will be returned to cool conditions, preferably not higher than + 16 ° C- + 18 ° C.

With these goals, you can simply open the window for airing and put the seedlings under a stream of cool air. You should not be too afraid of drafts, for cabbage the stifling and hot air is much more dangerous. However, if the seedlings have been excessively pampered from the first days of their life, then drafts can be dangerous for them. But the best thing is to find a place for her with a constantly cool temperature, ideally, if there is a difference of five to ten degrees between day and night temperatures.

Solution to the problem

So, what happens in 90% of cases with cabbage seedlings? From the very first hours, it gets into unfavorable for itself too warm conditions. As a result, the root system is not able to fully develop, the stems are strongly drawn out, and the plant immunity drops to zero. As a result, even the slightest mistake in the care, which in the normal state of the plant would not have noticed, leads to a further deterioration of the seedlings. It begins to wilt, turn yellow, sometimes fall immediately.

And what about the remaining 10%? They just represent the cases when the seedlings were affected by any infections or pests. It may have been planted in the soil with a more acidic reaction than it needs.

If we carry out all agronomic measures for the treatment of seeds and the care of cabbage seedlings on time and correctly, then such situations can almost be excluded. After all, cabbage, like all vegetables, seeks to grow, develop and delight in its harvest. It is only necessary to take into account its peculiar requirements and everything will be fine.
